PostSubject: THE PURR INCIDENT!   Mon Jun 30, 2008 10:48 pm

I'd made a mistake in saying that, so far, the day had been ordinary. Sure, ordinary means a whole different thing for us then it does for

the average Wisconsin resident, but still. It was a mistake that I should've learned from --though that's not a habit of mine. Learning, that is.

Especially not from my mistakes. So far that day, Margie and I had ignored the imposing clouds on the horizon and biked up to Silver Spring to

do completely normal things: drink too much coffee at Starbucks, throw our Fitzgeralds's roll of Sweetarts at passing SUVs, leave our bikes

behind to follow a friend of one of Margie's friends who wasn't answering his cell phone...well, I did say our definition of ordinary was a little r

radical, right?

Maybe we should've looked at those clouds and decided to stay home. Then again, it probably wouldn't have prevented what happened.

Sure, we wouldn't have gotten high off of caffine and those there'd be fewer Sweetarts in the road, but we still would've waltzed across the

street to take care of Margie's neighbors' cat, Purr, while they were on vacation. It's something we do every day-but today was the last day

for awhile. Some German people were coming to stay in the house for nine days, and apparently cleaning a litter box came with the deal.

Purr was what Margie called "a people cat". Unlike most cats, who have a strange tendency to hiss and claw at you, Purr would just walk in

adorable circles and, for lack of a better word, purr in the hopes that you'd scratch her on the head.

Until today, that is.

From the moment we walked into the door, Purr was acting strange. She hardly wanted to be petted and followed us everywhere we went

as we walked through various rooms. I thought he house had an almost frightening atmosphere, but I dismissed those feelings, blaming then

on that frappuccino.

I guess Margie was getting just as creeped-out by Purr as I was, since she was eager to clean the litter box (a first) and leave. Margie was

in the small bathroom, jabbing away at a particularly large lump of who-knows-what in the litter box when I noticed Purr at the end of the

hallway (I was waiting outside, since the bathroom was so small). She looked right at me, her olive green eyes glowing strangely and her ears

almost flat against her head. If that wasn't alarming enough --animals are NOT supposed to make eye contact!--, she started letting out these

wailing meows. At first I just tried to ignore it, but it was really starting to bother me.

"Margie!" I called. "Purr's acting weird! I think we should get out of here."

"No," she insisted, "I have to finish cleaning this big lump. The Germans are coming tomorrow, and everything has to be clean."

I wasn't listened to the voice of reason. "She's really scaring me! She's looking at the door --now she's staring right at me!" Just then, I

could've sworn Purr took a step towards me. That was it. I was not going to die from an attack by a possessed cat in someone else's house

while my best friend cleaned a litterbox. "Margie, you might want to come out and see this."

Margie emerged from the bathroom, still carrying the shovel she'd been using to clean with. Her eyes widened when she saw Purr.

"Creepy-kins creepy!" she exclaimed, using our trademark phrase. "We need to leave."

Instead of leaving like I'd hoped, Margie went back into the bathroom and stabbed that lump like her life depeneded on it --maybe she thought it

did --...and left me with the cat-monster.

"MARGIE," I persisted, "WE HAVE TO GET OUT OF HERE!"

Another look at Purr was all it took for Margie to drop the shovel, abandon the litter box, lock the door and slam it shut --without even washing

her hands. I ran away from Purr's house like it was on fire, only calming down when we reached the sidewalk, yelling "creepy! creepy!" all the

way.
